Modern literary expectations of a continuous, unbroken narrative are not met in the book of Mark. It’s really more a series of vignettes, or set pieces, like weekday newspaper comic strips. You’ve got a cast of characters that have particular roles to play and there is a handful of locations rendered to the stage. In this case, Jesus teaching by the seashore is something of a trope. He attracts people, and he teaches them.
