This passage is translated to read that Jesus psychically read the minds of people in the room and responded directly to their thoughts. The Greek uses some idioms that don’t seem to translate directly and provide the impression of mind reading. Given the context, it’s easy to imagine he only needed to see the shocked expression on their faces to know what they were thinking. In today’s parlance, it could have been something like “I know what you’re thinking…”, which doesn’t actually imply mind reading, either, but a recognition of a shared situation.
