Ἰησοῦς – Iasous was the Greek transcription for the Hebrew name ושעיה which we transliterate directly into English as Joshua. The Greek alphabet couldn’t represent the ‘sh’ sound, so only an ‘s’ was represented, and they added an extra ‘s’ at the end to make it a proper man’s name. So the fact that English speakers worship Jesus and not Joshua is an artifact of the original name having been transliterated first through Greek, then Latin.
The name Joshua was extremely common, and throughout the Gospels we see many characters with the same names applied to obviously different people – sometimes with a distinguishing relationship and other times not. There’s really nothing to indicate that only one person named Joshua or Jesus is being referenced throughout the Gospels, or even within a single book of the Gospels.
