31⌄¶ Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.

Mark 3:31

Once again, just because this scene occurs on the tail of the last does not necessarily mean that we are looking at the same messiah as in the prior three verses. However, I believe that it does for a couple of reasons. The first is that the mother remains outside, which would make sense if Jesus was in a synagogue, where the propositions would correspond to the story and social mores would have prevented women from entering the synagogue or standing in the street alone, and thus having to send a messenger. Jesus on the sea and Jesus on the mountain are already outside, so the propositions don’t match, and Jesus at home would already have mom at hand. So this is Jesus in the synagogue – Jesus of Gimla.

Remember back at verse 20-21, with confused Jesus at home? His people went to go lay hold of him and bring him home when they heard about the crowds and strange behavior. They see the crowds at the synagogue, hear folks talking about Jesus teaching inside, and decide this must be their man. Except that it wasn’t. It was a different Jesus inside, one that had Imperial authority and did not need saving. One can even imagine he probably got quite a chuckle from hearing that his long dead mom was asking for him on the street in an obvious case of misidentification.
