The first Jesus encountered in the Book of Mark, he is an agent of Rome and everything good. Anointed by Caesar and declared Son of Caesar, and thus the Son of God, Jesus Anointed preaches peace with Rome, and the importance of living like a Roman and holding Roman values. When he preaches, he converts people to Roman civilization. When he heals people, he heals their opposition to Rome. His time in the Wilderness is his time living among the oppositional Judean peoples.
This Jesus was a High Priest of the Temple of Jerusalem. A High Priest of the Temple of Jerusalem was a person of authority in the Judean region; their words were given the weight of law. Their habitation was well known and was frequently occupied by scholars and scribes, priests and supplicants. This was a person in the apex of fame and power, and during the time of the story, there were few limits to that power as the Judean region was self-governing.
The history of the political machinations around the Temple of Jerusalem is extensive, surprisingly so, given the relative brevity of their political independence. The primary groups vying for authority disagreed over whether their faith should lean more Persian or Greek, and a few leaders decided that Rome was the answer. Jesus Anointed represents one of these high priests who felt that Rome was a good solution to the increasing balkanization of their faith and culture.
