Spirit

At root, the word pneuma means ‘breath’, as in the air inhaled or expelled from the nostrils. Metaphorically, it implies life or living, but also to the ancients it referenced a kind of higher consciousness that led each person to their greatest purpose. In the context of the Roman Empire, they believed there was such a spirit guiding and protecting the whole empire, and they called it the Spirit of Rome (genius Roma).
